Archaeological research in Lebanon often focuses on settlement from the Bronze Age to Roman periods, while surrounding landscapes, earlier and later periods are under-represented. Large datasets collecting information from all periods and site types, such as the Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) database, address this imbalance. EAMENA predominantly uses satellite imagery to identify archaeological sites and the threats posed to them, leading to the recognition of many previously unpublished sites, including abandoned buildings and agricultural terraces. Here we explore how such data can be used to trace patterns of settlement and landscape use. Transects running from coast to uplands in northern and southern Lebanon are compared: the results show profound differences between north and south, and between coastal and inland zones. The importance of large, holistic datasets for previously understudied site types and periods in piecing together past patterns of land use, subsistence economies, burial traditions and change over time are demonstrated.

The aim of this paper is to present the methodology used to study the megalithic architecture of Menjez’s monuments (Akkar, Lebanon), as part of the MEG-A Project - “First megalith builders in the northern Levant” (2022–2025). Twenty-four monuments have been investigated since 2018. The primary objective is to pioneer a comprehensive understanding of the unique Levantine megalithic building techniques and re-establish the “chaînes opératoires,” by determining the builders’ sequence of actions. This groundbreaking methodology originally developed for Western European megalithic monuments, notably in Brittany, France, has been innovatively applied and customized to suit the Levantine context, specifically focusing on the distinctive basaltic monuments of Menjez and its surrounding areas. By using photogrammetry as a tool, the researchers are able to de-construct the megalithic architecture by analyzing the different components of these monuments. Moreover, it is then possible to describe monoliths according to their place within the monument and their geological and geomorphological features. Our work has led us to consider the symbolic aspect expressed in the megalithic architecture of Menjez. Employing this groundbreaking methodology not only yields concrete answers regarding the typology of these monuments but also dramatically reshapes our perception of their construction. It establishes a precise relative chronology for the various architectural phases and, most significantly, reveals the hidden details of the raw material supply chain.

Funerary megaliths in the Levant are a vast subject. Despite the discovery of thousands of monuments since the end of the 19 th century, their good visibility and accessibility due to low levels of sedimentation have led to the destruction of a considerable proportion of funeral deposits. Archaeologists have thus been forced to develop an approach relying mainly on morphology and the study of buildings.The publication reviewed here is the result of research carried out by J.A. Fraser for his doctoral thesis on dolmens in the Near East. The structure of the work resembles that of his thesis; both consist of two parts. The first part is further subdivided into six chapters (1 to 6) and is 176 pages long. The second part also contains six chapters (7 to 12) and is 163 pages in length. Between the two parts are 13 colour plates. The whole is extremely well supplemented, with 23 tables and 195 illustrations, most of which are sourced from archival images.Fraser uses the chapter 1 as an introduction where he expresses his founding idea: dolmens are monuments belonging to an uncommon funeral tradition among societies in the Levant in the 4 th century BC. By the morphological criteria he lists on p. 5, the author considers only a few megalithic monuments in the Levant other than trilithon dolmens to be "true" dolmens. The bulk of his study thus concerns itself with the latter type. This introductory chapter covers problems with the terminology surrounding, and the functions of, these monuments, their chronology and distribution, and his research site in the Wadi ar-Rayyan (Jordan).
