ETSI technical standards for satellite digital radio

Abstract: The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is a non-profit organization that creates technical standards for different areas of telecommunications. The ETSI activity satellite digital radio (SDR) addresses networks where satellite transmission is used for broadcasting directly to mobile receivers and is complemented by terrestrial transmitters. ETSI standards allow implementing parts Of Such systems in an interoperable way. A standardized radio interface enables a mass market for consumer recep… Show more

“…Two U.S. systems were followed in the mid 2000s by a system in Asia; one of the Asian subsystems for satellite radio is providing throughout South Korea roughly equal video and audio services to now over one million subscribers with handheld devices, see paper 6, 7 for more information on the Asian system. A demonstrational system to serve Europe is being implemented next year 8 following the recent completion of standards, see 9. Alternative approaches re‐using existing infrastructure are also looked on, see e.g.…”

“…The development of the technology and the service is evolving and one must also expect differences in system requirements between continents due to existing infrastructure, customer desires/expectations and user economics. The papers in this journal 4–11 attempt to address such issues and to look at innovative future implementations. Satellite radio is a new widespread service and its successful current implementation will result in future growth and change through the application of advanced technology.…”
