Etiology of Papilledema in Patients in the Eye Clinic Setting

Abstract: IMPORTANCE The study of health conditions associated with papilledema will augment the clinical judgment of eye care professionals treating patients with optic disc edema in determining the urgency of additional evaluation and counseling patients accordingly. OBJECTIVES To determine the incidence, demographic characteristics, and etiologies of papilledema based on a unique records-linkage research platform; and to describe the demographic and clinical differences between patients with idiopathic intracranial h… Show more

“…We did not specifically record prescriptions of drugs such as tetracyclines and retinoids that can cause secondary intracranial hypertension although this probably accounts for a small number of cases. 23 IIH incidence and prevalence in Wales are increasing considerably, corresponding to population increases in BMI. IIH is associated with increasing deprivation in women even after adjusting for obesity, suggesting additional etiologic factors associated with deprivation apart from BMI.…”

“…In the current case, possible causes of papilledema including idiopathic intracranial hypertension, tumor, hemorrhage, venous sinus thrombosis, and granulomatous meningitis [ 3 ] were all denied by neuroimaging and lumbar puncture, and as a result, presence of GCA was diagnosed. In a retrospective review of consecutive 221 patients with bilateral ODS with preserved visual function, diagnosis other than papilledema was found only in 4 (1.8%) patients [ 1 ].…”

“…ODS with preserved visual function differs between bilateral and unilateral cases. Bilateral ODS with preserved visual function is most often a result of papilledema due to intracranial pressure (ICP) elevation [ 1 , 3 ]. Further differential diagnosis is required when papilledema is ruled out, although such condition is rare [ 1 , 4 ].…”

“…12 The role of OCT is also pivotal in detecting other eye-related conditions like hyper-reflectivity due to macular telangiectasia type-2, 13 optic neuropathies, 14 and glaucomatous retinal nerve fiber layer loss. 15 Papilledema is a serious medical condition that leads to visual disturbances and occurs due to the optic disc's swelling because of increased intraocular pressure; 16,17 OCT technique can be used to measure the amount of optic disc edema in this condition. 18…”
