Objective To assess the prevalence and surgical treatment of facial fractures in a Swiss population aged 65 and over. Background The knowledge of the characteristics of geriatric trauma may help to prevent injuries and better allocate clinical resources for the management of multimorbid patients. Material and methods This study retrospectively evaluated a cohort of 181 patients who presented at the Bern University Hospital in Switzerland from May 2012 to September 2016. Data on age, gender, aetiology and type of trauma, treatment and complications, co‐morbidities and associated injuries were obtained. Results Women were most frequently affected (55.2%). Mean age was 80 years. Zygomatic complex fractures were the most frequent type of fractures (37%), followed by isolated orbital fractures (27.6%). Falls were the most common cause of trauma (76.1%). Thirty‐five per cent of all patients were taking anticoagulation or platelet aggregation medication. Hospitalisation was required in 88.4%, whereby 92.3% of the patients underwent surgical treatment. Surgery had to be performed immediately in three cases to treat compression of the optic nerve. Median hospital length of stay was 4 days, with 68% of patients returning to a domestic environment and 32% being transferred to another institution for further treatment. Conclusion The most common cause of facial injuries is a fall while standing in a domestic environment. Midface fractures were the most common type of fractures.

Introdução: pacientes acometidos por traumatismo craniofacial podem evoluir com sequelas variadas. Objetivo: identificar a prevalência de sequelas neurológicas ocorridas entre os pacientes com traumatismo craniofacial em um serviço de referência para o trauma no sul do Brasil. Sujeitos e método: foram analisados 1.385 prontuários, em que 169 (12%) pacientes foram selecionados com trauma em crânio e face simultaneamente, levando em consideração o agente etiológico, a procedência, a idade, o sexo do paciente e a localização das fraturas. Resultados: uma taxa de 85% dos indivíduos era do sexo masculino, com faixa etária entre 31-40 anos. Os fatores etiológicos mais prevalentes foram acidentes de trânsito (36%), quedas (22%) e violência interpessoal (21%). No grupo selecionado, o traumatismo cranioencefálico esteve presente em 89% dos casos; em 64% da população, não houve sequela neurológica; 28% apresentaram algum tipo de sequela; e em 8% dos prontuários não havia informações completas. Conclusão: na população estudada, mesmo com um subgrupo específico de traumatizados, houve prevalência de gênero masculino, terceira década de vida e acidente automobilístico. Além disso, a região anatômica mais acometida foi o conjunto de ossos do terço médio da face, e, ainda nesta condição de associação, o traumatismo cranioencefálico esteve presente na maioria dos casos, porém, somente 28% dos casos evoluíram com alguma sequela neurológica.

Gazi Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi'ne başvuran hastalarda meydana gelen mandibula kırıklarının etiyolojisinin, önceki çalışmalarla uyum gösterip göstermediğini ortaya koymaktır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Travma nedeniyle oluşan maksillofasiyal kırık vakaları sıklıkla karşımıza çıkan olgulardır. Maksillofasiyal travmalarda en çok kırılan kemik mandibuladır. Bu çalışmada, 2010-2017 tarihleri arasında fakültemize başvuran ve tıbbi kayıtlarına ulaşılabilen 126 mandibular kırık olgusunun verileri retrospektif olarak incelendi. Yaş, cinsiyet gibi demografik özellikler, etiyolojik faktörler, kırık yeri ve lokalizasyonu, kırık hattında diş mevcudiyeti, tedavi yöntemi, kırık türü, segmentlerde deplasman mevcudiyeti, beraberinde olan yüz yaralanmaları varlığı, komplikasyon görülme sıklığı geriye dönük olarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Toplam 132 hastadan 126'sının verileri bu çalışma için kullanıldı. 7 yıllık süre içerisinde 126 hastada toplam 155 adet kırık teşhis ve tedavi edildi. Erkek/Kadın oranı 2,7:1 olarak bulundu. Hastaların ortalama yaşı 32 olarak hesaplandı. En fazla görülen travma etkeni fiziksel şiddet (%38.09), en yaygın görülen lokalizasyon mandibula angulus bölgesi (%21.93) olarak belirlendi. Vakalardan 29 tanesinde çoklu kırık varlığı tespit edildi. 12 vakada (%9.52) postoperatif enfeksiyon ve 8 vakada (%6.34) rijit fiksasyon başarısızlığı gözlendi. Kırıkların %9.52'si açık redüksiyon, %41.26'sı kapalı redüksiyon ve %49.20'si açık redüksiyon ve intermaksiller fiksasyon ile tedavi edildi. Sonuç: Önceki çalışmalarla uyumlu olarak mandibula kırıklarının etiyolojisinde en önemli faktör %38,09 oranıyla fiziksel şiddet, ardından %24,60 oranı ile trafik kazaları olarak saptandı.
