Etiologic Relationship of the RI-67 Agent to “Acute Respiratory Disease (ARD)”1

Abstract: As the result of intensive studies of 9ctte respiratory infection in military populations-from 1941 to 1946, an entity termed "acute respiratory disease" was described by the Commission on Acute Respiratory Diseases (1-4). This syndrome, for convenience, was termed "ARD," and this designation will be employed hereafter. ARD is an acute febrile respiratory infection of short duration with both constitutional symptoms and localized respiratory symptoms characterized predominately by cough and hoarseness (1, 2). … Show more

“…-DISCUSSION Previous workers have reported the development of acute respiratory illness in human volunteers inoculated nasally with the filtered throat washings from a patient with ARD (4,20,21) and in human beings inoculated by the conjunctival or nasal route with adenoviruses propagated in tissue culture (22,23). The present experiments represent the first successful reproduction of acute respiratory disease in persons given adenovirus by a parenteral route and strongly support the etiological significance of these agents in respiratory illnesses of man.…”

“…Tissue Culture: HeLa Cd/s.--Stock cells of the HeLa strain (6) were cultivated in Eagle's basal medium (7) supplemented with 10 per cent human serum, as previously described (8). For cytological and fluorescein-labelled antibody studies the.cells were grown on coverslip pieces in 16 X 150 ram.…”

“…The illness became known as "acute respiratory disease (ARD) ." More recently, the etiology of the disease was ascribed principally to adenovirus type 4, although adenovirus type 7 was shown to be a cause, and adenovirus types 3 and 14 possible causes of such illness (2,3,7,8). With development of methods for detection of serum antibodies, additional tools became available for Reszdts.…”
