Ethylicin Inhibition of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola In Vitro and In Vivo

Abstract: Infestation of rice with the bacterium Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola (Xoc) causes the serious disease bacterial leaf streak (BLS). We studied the effect of ethylicin, a broad-spectrum bactericide, on Xoc both in vivo and in vitro. Ethylicin increases the defensive enzyme activities and defensive genes expression of rice. Ethylicin also significantly inhibited Xoc activity in vitro compared with other commercial bactericides. The half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) of ethylicin was 2.12 μg/mL. It has… Show more

“…For instance, ethylicin (ET) is a bionic bactericide inspired by allicin in garlic. 42 Previously, we have elucidated the underlying mechanism of ET-induced resistance to Xoo in rice by employing plant physiological and biochemical studies and transgenic technology. 43 This process entails the enhancement of defense enzymes by ET, modulation of the abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway, and induction of increased expression of OsCPK24 in rice, which serves as a mediator responsible for resistance to Xoo.…”

“…In recent years, 1,3,4-oxadiazole-containing structures have aroused widespread awareness from many researchers because of their broad spectrum and highly effective antibacterial activities against plant pathogens. In addition, disulfide (S–S) is an extremely promising chemical moiety frequently found in the structure of many naturally occurring small molecules and proteins (Figure b). For instance, ethylicin (ET) is a bionic bactericide inspired by allicin in garlic . Previously, we have elucidated the underlying mechanism of ET-induced resistance to Xoo in rice by employing plant physiological and biochemical studies and transgenic technology .…”
