Ethylene glycol and glycolic acid production by wild‐type Escherichia coli

Abstract: Ethylene glycol and glycolic acid are bulk chemicals with a broad range of applications. The ethylene glycol and glycolic acid biosynthesis pathways have been produced by microorganisms and used as a biological route for their production. Unlike the methods that use xylose or glucose as carbon sources, xylonic acid was used as a carbon source to produce ethylene glycol and glycolic acid in this study. Amounts of 4.2 g/L of ethylene glycol and 0.7 g/L of glycolic acid were produced by a wild‐type Escherichia co… Show more

“…Glycolic acid has been produced not only by enzyme catalysis but also by fermentations. The sugar fermentations allowed production of glycolic acid to a rather high concentration from xylose or glucose by using metabolically engineered microbial cells. , However, these processes are rather complicated, because of a number of byproduct formations.…”

“…In addition, the E. coli strain ΔaldA + yqhD was constructed that could produce EG or acetic acid alone, producing 8.0 g L −1 of EG with a conversion yield of 71 mol%. 122 Glycerol is a readily available and inexpensive substance mainly produced during biofuel production. An artificial enzymatic cascade reaction consisting of aldehyde glycol oxidase, catalase, glyoxylate/hydroxypyruvate reductase, pyruvate decarboxylase, and lactal propylene glycol oxidoreductase was developed for the production of glycol from glycerol.…”

“…In 2021, the output of GA in China was approximately 24,000 tons, and it is expected to reach 46,000 tons by 2030. GA can be obtained by natural extraction, chemical synthesis, and biological fermentation, of which chemical synthesis is the main way. , During the chemical preparation of GA, some impurities, such as inorganic salts, are generally produced, which affects the downstream processing and quality of crystalline GA. Thus, it is necessary to remove the impurities from a GA solution.…”
