Ethyl alcohol as a fuel for contemporary internal combustion engines

Abstract: The article presents the conditions for the use of ethyl alcohol as a component and a sole fuel for internal combustion engines. Methods of ethanol production, its properties and the benefits and risks associated with using it as engine fuel have been described. The variants of commercial ethanol fuels allowed by law have also been presented. Ecological aspects of the use of ethanol fuels for modern internal combustion engines were presented. The opinion was expressed that although ethanol is used in bulk as a… Show more

“…DME is not the only fuel currently being considered to power IC engines. Some studies [19][20][21][22] have discussed the possibilities of using renewable plant-derived fuels. These fuels were fed into diesel engines, where the combustion process and the potential for changing the EGR valve settings were examined.…”

“…Other studies have discussed the possibility of using ethanol to power IC engines. Manufacturers offering vehicles with engines adapted for ethanol fuel are featured in another study, which also analyses options for running on CNG, biodiesel, and electricity [21]. The most recent study [13,[23][24][25] presents numerical simulations of a four-cylinder IC engine simulated in an AVL Boost environment.…”

“…In many countries, scientists are conducting research to check the emission of conventional fuels in typical or less typical applications of self-ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI) engines [2,3]. However, it seems that the greatest interest in recent years has been the research on modern alternative fuels such as, e.g., alcohols [4][5][6]. Within the group of alternative fuels, hydrogen is probably the most popular and forward-looking fuel.…”

“…For nearly two decades, intensive research has been carried out worldwide on the gradual substitution of traditional petroleum-derived fuels with alternative fuels [2,3,5,13,14,17,19,20,21,[23][24][25]. Diversification of energy sources and ecological aspects are the main objectives of this research.…”

“…The basic biofuels include (used mainly in spark ignition engines) and esters of unsaturated fatty acids, used mainly to feed compression ignition engines. The biofuels are produced from biomass, an annually reproducible source of energy, obtainable in large quantities [1,[12][13][14]16]. The biomass is created in the process of photosynthesis, using carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and solar energy.…”
