Ethnoracial Homogeneity and Public Outcomes: The (Non)effects of Diversity

Abstract: How does ethnoracial demography relate to public goods provision? Many studies find support for the hypothesis that diversity is related to inefficient outcomes by comparing diverse and homogeneous communities. We distinguish between homogeneity of dominant and disadvantaged groups and argue that it is often impossible to identify the effects of diversity due to its collinearity with the share of disadvantaged groups. To disentangle the effects of these variables, we study new data from Brazilian municipalitie… Show more

“…To do this, we study a context, the Chicago metro area (i.e., "Chicagoland"), with a substantial number of predominately non-White neighborhoods. In such neighborhoods, high non-White representation coincides with low heterogeneity; these observations are needed to disentangle the effects of heterogeneity from those of group share (Kustov and Pardelli 2018).…”

“…1 The use of these indexes has been roundly criticized, because they obscure the identities and hierarchies between groups (Posner 2004;Abascal and Baldassarri 2015), while being, in many contexts, collinear with the representation of minority groups (Kustov and Pardelli 2018;Schaeffer 2013).…”
