Ethnopharmacological Approaches for Therapy of Jaundice: Part I

Abstract: Jaundice is a very common symptom especially in the developing countries. It is associated with several hepatic diseases which are still major causes of death. There are many different approaches to jaundice treatment and the growing number of ethnomedicinal studies shows the plant pharmacology as very promising direction. Many medicinal plants are used for the treatment of jaundice, however a comprehensive review on this subject has not been published. The use of medicinal plants in drug discovery is highly e… Show more

“…The keywords used were alcohol dependence, addiction, complimentary medicines, phytotherapy, ethnopharmacology, and ethnobotany, alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme, dopamine, gamma-amino butyric acid, etc. The data was congregated through the Boolean information retrieval method using plant name along with "AND" operator (Pohl et al, 2010;Tewari et al, 2017a) followed by alcohol dependence and addiction. No prerequisite limitations on publications, i.e., language, year, and publication type (original 1.…”

“…We searched several web databases namely, Scifinder, ScienceDirect, Pubmed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Boolean information retrieval method (Pohl et al, 2010) was applied using plant name with “AND” operator as also done in some other systemic reviews (Tewari et al, 2017, 2018) followed by “cataract” and using other different keywords such as “cataract”, “traditional medicine”, “ethnobotany”, “sodium selenite”, and “ethnopharmacology”.…”

“…We examined the trends of common medical conditions and effects that are often investigated in ethnopharmacological research, namely AIDS/HIV, cancer, cardioprotection, diabetes, diarrhea, hepatoprotection, hypertension, infection, inflammation, neuroprotection, pain, parasites, tuberculosis, hallucinogenic and psychoactive effects (Heinrich, 2010;Tewari et al, 2017;Tewari et al, 2018;Waltenberger et al, 2016). Toxicity, drug interactions and related concepts are also important aspects (Ezuruike and Prieto, 2014).…”
