Ethnobotany, Phytochemistry, Pharmacology of the Korean Campanulaceae: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: -The present study was carried out to identify traditional konwledges on Korean Campanulaceae plants and conduct a comprehensive review of them through analyzing phytochemistry and pharmacology of Korean Campanulaceae plants. According to the literature study, the ethnobotanical plants of Korean Campanulacae consisted of a total 18 taxa. Of them, 12 taxa including Platycodon grandiflorus, Adenophora triphylla var. japonica, Codonopsis lanceolata and others have been used as ethnomedicinal plants. These plants … Show more

“…By repetitive chromatographic separation of the hot water extract, three new neolignan glucosides (1)(2)(3) were isolated, along with 15 known compounds, including five lignans (4)(5)(6)(7)(8), five phenolic compounds (9-13), and five flavonoids (14)(15)(16)(17)(18), in the present research (Figure 1). It was reported that the n-butanol and ethyl acetate fractions of C. takesimana exhibit free radical-scavenging, tyrosinase inhibition, and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities [2].…”

“…It was reported that the n -butanol and ethyl acetate fractions of C. takesimana exhibit free radical-scavenging, tyrosinase inhibition, and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities [ 2 ]. Although extensive research has been done on the pharmacological activities and/or phytochemical constituents of the plants belonging to family Campanulaceae, yet only few studies have been conducted on the genus Campanula , despite their frequent traditional use [ 3 ]. Moreover, chemical constituents of C. takesimana have never been reported from previous studies.…”

“…Compared with the results from previous studies [ 2 , 8 , 16 , 31 , 32 ], 56 chemical components were identified for the first time in Campanulaceae. The stem, leaf and seed contain more flavonoids but few saponins that can be easily discriminated from the root.…”
