BackgroundThis work increases the ethnomedicinal plants information in the Uvira Territory and, in particular, the middle plateau. Till now little is known about ethnomedicinal researches in Uvira Territory and no previous study has surveyed the medicinal uses of plants in the middle plateau of Uvira Territory. MethodsThe plant uses information survey was collected through a direct interview conducted with 25 local healers in 7 villages. The ethnobotanical information for each species, including scientific name, family, local name, morphological type, plant parts used, preparation, disease name, plant habitat was collected. The conservation status of plant species was checked by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. various quantitative indices (Relative frequency of citation Use Value, Informant consensus factor, Family Importance Value, Pearson’s correlation, Jaccard Index) were calculatedResultsInformation on 69 medicinal plants belonging to 61 genera and 34 families was collected. The total number of species per family showed that Fabaceae, Asteraceae, and Myrtaceae were most represented. Most species were herbs. Leave was the most frequently used part and decoction was the principal preparation method. Significantly higher numbers of medicinal plants were used against digestive system disorders and intestinal parasites. Tetradenia riparia, Syzygium guineense, Morella salicifolia and Erythrina abyssinica were the medicinal plants with the highest UV values. The Pearson correlation coefficient between RFC and UV was 0.95 showing a highly positive significant association. A total of 14 species were recorded as vulnerable.ConclusionThis study was able to show that this area, located in middle plateau of Uvira Territory, can provide a considerable medicinal plant diversity with an heterogenous medicinal importance to the community. With the relative high number of vulnerable species, there is a requirement for a sustainable management for these medicinal plants.

For a long time, vegetation has provided man with remedies to deal with his health problems such as erectile dysfunction. This study was conducted to inventory plants and recipes used in traditional medicine in Kampemba (Lubumbashi) in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions. This descriptive ethnobotanical survey was carried out between October 2017 and June 2018. It was conducted by direct interview using a guide questionnaire with 34 practitioners of traditional medicine (PMT). The 34 PMT consulted were mainly men (sex ratio Man / Women = 2.09) aged 49 ± 11 years. They provided information on 51 recipes and 33 plants among which only 21 species have been scientifically identified. Albizia adianthifolia (Schum.) W. Wight (Fabaceae) and Pericopsis angolensis (Baker) Meeuwen (Fabaceae) are the most cited species. These 21 plants are mostly trees (57%) belonging to 12 families dominated by Fabaceae (21.2%) and indicated in 22 pathologies dominated by sexual impotence with a fidelity level (FL) of 0.59. From these plants derive 37 recipes from which the root is the most used organ (75.7%). The decoction (45.9%) and the drink (78.4%) are respectively the methods of preparation and administration route most requested. This study reports for the first time the aphrodisiac use of 8 plants among which, Schrebera trichoclada Welw (Oleaceae), Strychnos stuhlmannii Gilg (Loganiaceae) and Terminalia mollis MA Lawson (Combretaceae) have the highest fidelity index (FL) (FL> 0.1). Kampemba PMTs know and use aphrodisiac plants whose investigations deserve to be continued to validate their traditional knowledge.

Traditional utilization of medicinal plants against diabetes mellitus (DM) is common in South Africa and other African countries. This study was aimed at documenting medicinal plants used against DM by the Bapedi and Vhavenda ethnic groups of the Limpopo province, South Africa. This study was based on a review of literature published in scientific journals, books, reports from national, regional, and international organizations, theses and conference papers obtained from libraries and electronic databases. A total of 61 plant species belonging to 39 botanical families, mainly the Fabaceae (n=6), Asteraceae (n=5), and Cucurbitaceae (n=4) were used by Bapedi (n=33) and Vhavenda (n=25) to treat and manage DM. Cassia abbreviata, Momordica balsamina, and Moringa oleifera are used by both the Bapedi and Vhavenda people. Plant parts widely used to prepare DM medicines include roots (40.0%), leaves (27.0%), bark (15.0%), and whole plant (7.0%). Monotherapy preparations made from a single plant species are the most dominant (88.5%) while 11.5% are prepared from a combination of two or more species. More than half (65.5%) of the species used to treat and manage DM are known to possess antidiabetic activities and various secondary metabolites. This study illustrates the importance of medicinal plants in the treatment and management of DM in South Africa.
