“…Yet, there is already sufficient scholarship to suggest that certain types of diversity are likely to result in more negative reactions, as the cultural, linguistic, racial and economic backgrounds of different groups do not trigger the same 'threat' mechanisms (Citrin et al 1997;Dixon 2006). Indeed, various authors have shown or argued that a more subtle consideration of the multiple 'variants' of diversity is needed (Letki 2008;Lancee and Dronkers 2011). The underlying logic is that the causal mechanisms by which diversity has an effect on trust or social capital are likely to be different depending on the type of diversity we are considering.…”

“…Several studies have found a negative relationship between neighborhood ethnic diversity (measured using a Herfindahl index or percentage of ethnic minorities) and social contacts (Gijsberts, van der Meer, & Dagevos, 2011; Lancee & Dronkers, 2011; Tolsma, van der Meer, & Gesthuizen, 2009; Vervoort, Flap, & Dagevos, 2011). Negative effects of diversity upon trust have also been reported, albeit in a qualified manner, with lower trust in neighbors but not interethnically (Lancee & Dronkers, 2011), lower trust among the majority group but not other ethnic groups (Gundelach & Freitag, 2014), or trust dependent on the proportion of the next lower-placed ethnic group (in status terms) in the neighborhood (Bakker & Dekker 2012). In European studies, a higher level of perceived neighborhood ethnic mix is associated with more interethnic friendships and lower perceived ethnic threat (Kouvo & Lockmer, 2013; Semyonov & Glikman, 2009).…”
