Abstract:Summary
Geographers have become increasingly interested in questions of ethics. In this paper, I introduce the scope and major concerns of ethics, briefly reviewing recent literature as a means of situating geography's potential contribution. I then link ethics to the geographical imagination by developing a twofold schema representing geography's ontological project and epistemological process, an approach that unites existing professional and substantive ethical concerns among geographers. “…At its heart the idea of individual ethical accountability lays em phasis on individuals sharpening their`m oral imaginations' (Hay, 1998;Proctor, 1997). However, this sharpening can easily m iss an engagement with the wider picture if driven by the view that research simply comprises a series of encounters involving choices about whether to participate or not.…”

Increasingly, geographers are considering the fundamentally relational nature of ethics. This consideration is involving a developing concern w ith process (e.g. the social relations of research projects) as w ell as procedures (e.g. administrative guidelines). In this paper, a development in the teaching of ethics is reported from a third-year undergraduate research design and methods course w hich develops the view that research involves a com plex w eb of relationships. Ethically vexing anecdotes were elicited from practising geographers and a computer-based tutorial package designed that involves students interacting with this material. However, advocacy of this online approa ch to teaching is not without am bivalence. It is cautioned that being interactive w ith computers, in the absence of other teaching formats, might curtail students' interaction with each other in their developm ent of moral imaginations.

“…Morality is commonly conceptualized as the sphere of significant normative concerns, relying on a distinction between how the world is and how the world ought to be, and concentrating on the latter (Proctor 1998). Moral values provide the basis for evaluating human conduct and are often expressed by notions such as good or bad, right or wrong, and worthy or unworthy (Philo 1991).…”
