Ethics Education in Research Involving Human Beings in Undergraduate Medicine Curriculum in Brazil

Abstract: The data indicates that medical schools that employ more active learning methodologies provide more attention and time to ethical themes than schools with traditional discipline-based methodologies. Given the importance of ethical issues in contemporary medical education, these findings are significant for curriculum change and modification plans in the future of Brazilian medical education.

“…Some practitioners may be of the opinion that mere compliance to the rules and guidelines of these codes constitute ethical conduct, whilst in actual fact the intention of codes of conduct is to engage practitioners in in-depth ethical reflection, interpretation, critical thinking, debate and decision-making skills to deal with a wide variety of ethical dilemmas in health care contexts (Banks 1998 ; Novaes et al . 2014 ). The codes should also assist physiotherapists to bridge the divide between abstract theoretical ethics principles and constructs contained in medico-legal documents and on-the-ground-real-life ethical challenges (Burke et al .…”

“…It is essential to seize concepts of medical ethics in training, given their extreme need in the preparation of physicians 5,21,[35][36][37][38] when establishing ethical conduct in the scientific, technological, biological and health fields 2,7 . However, this research revealed low overall performance of G1, which, when added to the cases of superior performance of G2, shows that the instruction of students, even among those who attended at least one of the two disciplines that address medical ethics, is insufficient to deal with other dilemmas.…”

“…It is necessary, in addition to longer time of contact with the theme, that diversified methods be used in the learning process. There are several nontraditional teaching resources that can be applied in this case, such as movies, dilemma scenarios, casuistry, stagings, theatre plays, simulations, video conferences, seminars, lectures, workshops and case discussions 1,3,5,[29][30][31][32]34,38,39,41 .…”

“…In "Ethics education in research involving human beings in undergraduate medicine curriculum in Brazil", it states that the teaching of ethics in Brazil began at the end of the 19th century. Brazilians believe that creating an "ethical stance and reflective thinking" could develop professionalism, which is an "ongoing responsibility" (Novaes et al, 2013). An example of ethics at work can be seen in Brazil's medical practices involving human subjects.…”
