Ethics and the Pharmaceutical Industry

Abstract: Letters and the efforts of vocational training schemes to increase the skills of young doctors in this area. Dr Aldridge cites much anecdotal evidence in support of his views. However, most caring doctors will use any agency to supplement their own care in appropriate circumstances and Dr Aldridge should recognize that some doctors and some patients find his approach intrusive and unhelpful in a doctor-patient relationship which has often been nurtured over many years.

However, lack of expertise among health professionals, little interdisciplinary cooperation, and decreased financial support are all barriers to successful MDT care ( 19 ). It is also important to treat patient and carer as a “unit,” with the QOL of the carer linked to the physical and mental health of their charge ( 20 ).…”

“…The industry is highly profitable thanks largely to revenue from public health schemes and insurance contributions, yet the high costs and risks associated with new drug discovery have been used to justify a growing disengagement from research by the pharmaceutical industry [ 160 ]. If not counterbalanced by broad and dedicated investment in SMEs and universities, this process might be highly detrimental to the already damaged social contract between this industry and society in the short and medium term [ 161 ].…”
