This paper explores the concept of ethico-onto-epistemology and its contributions to education policy research. Specifically, it seeks to define onto-epistemology and ethical-onto-epistemology, with special reference to Anna Stetsenko’s work. The main arguments developed are the following: a) ethics is one of the structuring elements of research (and not a mere appendix); b) all research involves ethical issues; c) the ethico-onto-epistemological perspective can contribute to the development of more integrated and coherent research; and d) the transformative activist stance contributes to achieving the social purpose of the research and the researcher’s work.

In this essay, I propose a reconceptualising of counsellor-in-training tears from dominant ideas of tears as a personal, emotional response to tears as intra-active cultural, political, social, material and affective phenomena. This reconceptualization is stimulated by (and in the context of) the social practice of counselling and, within that, the process of becoming a counsellor. I draw on data analysis performed in my doctoral research, where I worked with a diverse group of eight counsellors-in-training over the period of one year, in Aotearoa New Zealand, using a collective biography methodology. Turning to Karen Barad's feminist new materialist framework of agential realism for data analysis entailed an entangled process of thinking data with theory, in which the material and affective flows of research participant (counsellor-intraining) tears began to 'glow' as a matter for further analysis. The aim of this essay is not to present a data analysis, rather it is to outline an intra-active research process of coming to 'see' tears as an analytic object, to conceptualise them as intra-active phenomena, and to outline the potential of the poem as performative analytic device. Ultimately, I re-present a collective biography of participants' tears through the analytic device of the poem, where the entanglements of matter and meaning, and the agency and mystery of tears, are enacted through the poem's affective and discursive forces.

Post-humanist theories and feminist new materialism are a growing feature of social work scholarship. It is timely to explore how these theories inform qualitative social work research approaches. Drawing on post-qualitative methodology and Barad’s concept and method of diffraction, in this article we engage in a performative re-analysis of an account of school social work practice with a group of boys with behavioural concerns. We illuminate the interplay of neurological and behaviourist ways of knowing boys and social workers’ expertise and their linkages with the materiality of the place and space of the school-based group programme. Moving beyond merely representing these material-discursive happenings, this paper affirms new social worker identities and behavioural boys’ subjectivities which emerge within the entangled relations with non-human, material objects and things in schools. Doing post-qualitative inquiry, co-configures us as researchers actively involved in knowledge generation as we seek to make differences that matter in social work practice. Diffraction not only offers methods to engage with the material-discursive interface of social work knowledge practices, but also an ethical methodology for researchers to do justice in our engagement with research data.
