Ethanolamine Oleate Sclerotherapy for Hydroceles and Spermatoceles: A Survey of 158 Patients with Ultrasound Followup

Abstract: Sclerotherapy with 5% ethanolamine oleate was used to treat 102 hydroceles in 100 patients and 63 spermatoceles in 58 patients. Scrotal ultrasound examination was performed before the sclerotherapy and at each followup visit. Of the hydroceles 98% were cured completely and 68% were cured after only 1 sclerosant instillation, while 60% of the spermatoceles resolved completely and 33% partially, with 7% failures. No hydroceles recurred during an average followup of 43 months, whereas spermatocele recurred in 4 p… Show more

“…before and after sclerotherapy showed no changes in testicular structure and size [5]. While there is some Discussion indication that sclerotherapy might decrease fertility, it seems reasonable to exclude younger men from this These results show that both polidocanol and tetracycline are useful agents for the sclerotherapy of hydrocele treatment until more data are available.…”

“…Some patients underwent scrotal ultradescribed in a series of phase II studies; eÂective treatment has been described using phenol [4], ethanolamine sonography pre-operatively. All patients were treated on an out-patient basis oleate [5], sodium tetradecyl sulphate [6], polidocanol [7] and tetracycline [8,9]. The side-eÂects are generally according to a common protocol in three separate Departments between December 1991 and February reported to be low, except for tetracycline, where the results are conflicting.…”

“…This side effect depends on the type of sclerosing agent used, and occurs also with the use of Etanolamine in 15% of patients (19), with sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate in up to 9% (20) and with Tetracycline in up to 7.5% (21).…”

“…Sclerotherapy has grown in popularity as it is a safe, effective, and painless outdoor procedure and also economically beneficial for the patient. The effectiveness of various sclerosants reported in the literature is between 53 and 98 % [7,8]. The present study was carried out with an aim to perform a prospective study to establish the role of sodium tetradecyl sulfate (3 %) (STDS) as a safe and effective sclerosant in the management of primary hydrocele.…”
