Sorghum is a multipurpose crop that is cultivated worldwide. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have important roles in enhancing sorghum biomass and nutrient uptake and suppressing plant pathogens. The aim of this research was to test the effects of the endophytic bacterial species Kosakonia radicincitans strain IAC/BECa 99, Enterobacter asburiae strain IAC/BECa 128, Pseudomonas fluorescens strain IAC/BECa 141, Burkholderia tropica strain IAC/BECa 135 and Herbaspirillum frisingense strain IAC/BECa 152 on the growth and root architecture of four sorghum cultivars (SRN-39, Shanqui-Red, BRS330, BRS509), with different uses and strigolactone profiles. We hypothesized that the different bacterial species would trigger different growth plant responses in different sorghum cultivars. Burkholderia tropica and H. frisingense significantly increased the plant biomass of cultivars SRN-39 and BRS330. Moreover, cultivar BRS330 inoculated with either strain displayed isolates significant decrease in average root diameter. This study shows that Burkholderia tropica strain IAC/BECa 135 and H. frisingense strain IAC/BECa 152 are promising PGPB strains for use as inocula for sustainable sorghum cultivation.

Eight yeast isolates identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae were recovered from molasses-using Cuban distilleries and discriminated by nucleotide sequence analysis of ITS locus. The isolates L/25-7-81 and L/25-7-86 showed the highest ethanol yield from sugarcane juice, while L/25-7-12 and L/25-7-79 showed high ethanol yield from sugarcane molasses. The isolate L/25-7-86 also displayed high fermentation capacity when molasses was diluted with vinasse. In addition, stress tolerance was evaluated on the basis of growth in the presence of inhibitors (acetic acid, lactic acid, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and sulfuric acid) and the results indicated that L/25-7-77 and L/25-7-79 congregated the highest score for cross-tolerance and fermentation capacity. Hence, these isolates, especially L/25-7-77, could serve as potential biological platform for the arduous task of fermenting complex substrates that contain inhibitors. The use of these yeasts was discussed in the context of second-generation ethanol and the environmental and economic implications of the use of vinasse, saving the use of water for substrate dilution.

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is a source of sugars. In Mexico, trials have been carried out to evaluate adaptation of the crop as a potential source of biomass, sugar and ethanol. Fertilization is a factor that influences production. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of inorganic fertilization on yield and production of soluble solids under irrigation conditions. An irrigation field experiment was established on February 25, 2010 and March 3, 2011, in Río Bravo, Tamaulipas (INIFAP-CIRNE). The variety used was EBO-809 Type N (Normalreich: moderately rich in sugar), with 13 doses of (N‑P) from 150-00-00 to 300-200-00, and the control without fertilization. Urea was the source of (N) and triple superphosphate of (P). Fresh weight (Mg ha-1), chlorophyll index (SPAD), soluble solids (oBrix) and incidence of root rot (%) were evaluated. The factor with the highest statistical value was the fertilization dose (T), explaining 70% of the variance 24% the year (A), and there was no interaction (T × A). Root rot was attributable by Rhizoctonia solani (Kühn), which is negatively associated with yield, due to atypical winter rainfall in 2010. There were no differences between treatments with N-P fertilization. The critical value of N was superior to the control and ≤ to 150 kg ha-1. The concentration of sugars was not related to yield, SPAD or R. solani incidence; moreover, it was inversely proportional to the nitrogen dose.
