Ethanol Content Determination in Medicine Syrups Using Headspace and Multidimensional Heart-Cut Gas Chromatography Coupled to Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: Despite the efforts of the pharmaceutical industry to reduce the ethanol content in medicines, many of these products are still commercially available. These medicines must be monitored by quality control techniques using accurate method. Therefore, this study proposes to develop and validate an analytical method for ethanol quantification in adult and pediatric syrups, in order to guarantee the safety of medication certificates. For this, headspace multidimensional gas chromatography (heart-cut) coupled to ma… Show more

“…extract containing umckalin includes approximately 11 % ethanol in traditional and medicinal products (Wopker et al, 2020). However, ethanol containing products are reported as hazardous for infants and children (Batista et al, 2020). The extraction with the solvent mixture containing ethanol free was defined, thus obtaining a liquid preparation that provides a convenient use for children (Kohnen, 2007).…”

“…Accurate estimation of ethanol concentration is required in alcohol industries to optimize and regulate the fermentation process for increasing yields and quality of products. [1] The same is necessary in medical institutions [2,3] and fuel industries, [4][5][6] where the concentrations of ethanol need to be adjusted in different solutions depending on their applications. Ethanol is also used widely in cosmetics, [7] and perfumery [8] as preservative agent and carrier of fragrances.…”
