“…The mediterranean climate is generally characterized by summer aridity and rainfall concentration in winter (Emberger 1954;Nahal 1981;Box 1987). Temperature is used to define types of mediterranean climates or bioclimatic belts (Ozenda 1975;Quézel 1979;Rivas-Martínez 1982, 1984, which is important for the separation of the warmer forests of both Quercus pyrenaica and Q. rotundifolia (AQp, PQr) from the remaining types. In both cases, the results show many highly correlated monthly temperature variables, which indicate a permanent or annual phenomenon related both to thermic efficiency and frost resistance (temperatures below -10°C are rare in AQp and PQr).…”

“…Paleoenvironmental interpretation of the downcore pollen assemblage fluctuations is based on the assumption that the primary pollen contribution to Alboran Sea sediments comes from western Mediterranean borderlands. Modern environments range from a thermo-Mediterranean belt, with Olea, Pistacia, and some steppe or semidesert representatives (Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae, Ephedra), to a meso-Mediterranean belt, represented by a sclerophyllous oak forest to a humidtemperate oak forest (mainly Quercus associated with Ericaceae), to a supra-Mediterranean belt with a cold-temperate coniferous forest (Pinus, Abies, Cedrus) at the higher altitudes (Ozenda, 1975;Rivas Martinez, 1982) (Fig. 1).…”

“…Mean annual temperature is 14°C and ranges from 4°C (January) to 24°C (July) (Morellón et al 2008) and references therein). Lake Estanya is located at the transitional zone between Mediterranean and Submediterranean bioclimatic regimes (Rivas-Martínez 1982), at 670 m.a.s.l. The…”
