Estudos bacteriológicos e sorológicos de um surto de peste no Estado da Paraíba, Brasil

Abstract: During a plaque outbreak in the Borborema Plateau focus (Paraiba), bacteriological and serological studies were carried out in material from 452 patients (48 positives), 1,938 rodents and other small mammals (75 positives), 4,756 dogs (141 positives) and 2,047 cats (57 positives) obtained from 41 counties (out of which, 21 produced positive samples). Twenty Yersinia pestis strains isolated from material from 3 patients and 17 rodents, displayed biochemical reactions, virulence factors, antibiotic susceptibilit… Show more

“…The isolation and identification of Y. pestis from plague patients in Brazil may be hampered by inadequate procedures used in the shipment of specimens from plague areas to the diagnosis centres, which may lead to either the desiccation or contamination of samples (Almeida et al. 1981, 1989).…”

“…However, only a few of them were found to be positive by bacteriological assays. This low positive rate was attributed to inadequate collection of the samples and poor shipment conditions (Almeida et al. 1989).…”

“…The Y. pestis strains studied were obtained from the bacterial collection of the Centro de Pesquisas Aggeu Magalhães (1,2,13,14). Since isolation, they have been stored in stabs of Blood Agar Base (BAB, Difco), at +4 o C. Subculturing some of these isolates, for different purposes, at different periods, originated some spontaneous variants.…”

“…During the period of 1966 to 1997, we have isolated 882 strains of Y. pestis from different hosts and distinct geographic foci (1,2). A preliminary evaluation of the plasmid content of 26 of these strains freshly isolated during a plague outbreak (13) has revealed a homogeneous pattern composed of the three wellcharacterized Y. pestis plasmids: pFra (90-110 kb), pYV (70 kb) and pPst (9.5 kb), plus an extra-cryptic DNA band of about 23 kb (13).…”
