Estudo epidemiológico de nascidos vivos com Espinha Bífida no Brasil/ Epidemiological study of live births with Spina Bifida in Brazil

Show more

“…Intrauterine surgical techniques are being extensively studied and modi ed according to the experience and availability of resources at each site. More and more teams are now able to offer this type of treatment, thus increasing the time needed for each team to acquire experience, since the number of affected fetuses remains the same [2,3], and delaying the performance of studies involving larger numbers of patients. Meanwhile, more robust data are awaited, particularly from studies by more experienced teams involving larger sample sizes that will be able to pinpoint the surgical intricacies that will maximize bene ts to the fetus while minimizing the risk of undesirable outcomes in the mother.…”

“…Its most common form is myelomeningocele, which occurs following failure of the neural tube to close in the rst four weeks after conception and is characterized by herniation of a sac containing cerebrospinal uid, spinal cord and nerves. Spina bi da is more prevalent in developing countries, ranging from around 3.2 cases per 10,000 liveborn infants in the United States to 7 per 10,000 in Brazil [1][2][3].…”

“…The time spent in TAI, less than 30 minutes in most cases, is reasonable, especially considering that intestinal management using other measures (toilet training and manual maneuvers for intestinal evacuation) can take even longer and be less effective. 4 Although the frequency, the type of irrigation solution used, and the volume of liquid were mentioned, the procedure itself was scarcely described. This could affect the safety and comfort of the individual, as well as the confidence of parents, who are essential actors for the continuity of care.…”
