Ecological restoration encourages management for the complexity and heterogeneity of habitats, which are crucial for avian fauna structure. Two-year-old bird assemblages were evaluated based on diversity parameters of three different ecological restoration technologies applied in southern Brazil: passive restoration (PR), nucleation (NC) and high diversity plantation (HD). Richness, abundance and diversity were compared using ANOVA factorial design (three treatments x four seasons, with six samplings per season). The highest richness was observed for NC (49 ± 2.45 SD species) and the lowest richness occurred in the HD treatment (37 ± 3.14 SD species), with a similar statistical pattern for abundance and diversity (NC>PR>HD). NC responded favorably to the hypotheses of dynamic equilibrium, heterogeneity and habitat complexity, which are the probable mechanisms that influence primarily assemblage richness. Due to the presence of exclusive species for each treatment, we recommend the application of a mix of the different techniques tested to maximize the number of habitats and their interactions with birdlife.Keywords: neotropical forest, ecological restoration, avian fauna. ResumoA restauração ecológica estimula o manejo da complexidade e heterogeneidade de habitats, os quais são decisivos para a estruturação da avifauna. Foram avaliadas assembleia de aves com dois anos de idade segundo parâmetros de diversidade de três diferentes tecnologias de restauração ecológica aplicadas no sul do Brasil: restauração passiva (PR) nucleação (NC), e plantio de alta diversidade (HD). Os parâmetros de riqueza, abundância e diversidade foram comparados por meio de ANOVA em arranjo fatorial (três tratamentos x quatro estações com seis amostragens por estação). A maior riqueza observada foi constatada na NC (49 ± 2,45 espécies) e a menor riqueza ocorreu no tratamento PAD (37 ± 3,14 espécies) com um padrão estatístico semelhante para abundância e diversidade. NC respondeu favoravelmente às hipóteses do equilíbrio dinâmico, heterogeneidade e complexidade de habitats, sendo estes os prováveis mecanismos que influenciaram principalmente na riqueza da assembleia. Devido à presença de espécies exclusivas a cada um dos tratamentos, recomenda-se a aplicação conjunta das técnicas testadas para maximizar o número de habitats e suas interações com a avifauna.Palavras chave: floresta neotropical, restauração ecológica, avifauna.

In northeastern Brazil, the reduction of the natural forest cover to a series of small, isolated fragments has had negative consequences for the local avian fauna, in particular, a loss of the more specialized species, while the populations of some generalists have tended to increase. The present study focuses on the composition and trophic groups of a bird community on a farm in the northeastern Brazilian state of Alagoas. Monthly surveys were conducted between November 2008 and October 2009, based on mistnetting and systematic observations. Overall, 112 species were recorded, of which 76 were associated with the two forest fragments surveyed, while all the others were observed exclusively in the surrounding matrix of pasture and orchards. The bird community presented a predominance of insectivorous species, followed by omnivores. However, specialized trunk-creeping and understory insectivores accounted for only around 15% of the species in this feeding category. The reduced diversity of other guilds and species with more specialized diets, and the complete absence of sensitive species such as large parrots and raptors, reflects the severe fragmentation and degradation of the local forests, which has greatly reduced the availability of dietary resources and breeding sites.

ResumoO presente estudo teve como objetivo fazer um levantamento das espécies de aves do Parque Estadual do Pico do Jabre, Paraíba, listando as espécies em relação as suas categorias tróficas e dependência de ambientes florestais. Foram montadas 240 listas de Mackinnon em 12 dias de amostragem. A família que apresentou maior riqueza foi Tyrannidae, com 20 espécies, seguida de Thamnophilidae (7), Trochilidae (6) e Emberizidae (6). Aproximadamente 20% das espécies que ocorrem na área se mostraram dependentes de ambientes florestais, 38,7% semi-dependentes e 41,4% independentes. A baixa participação de espécies dependentes de ambientes florestais na comunidade pode estar associada a pressão sofrida no entorno do parque. A manutenção destas áreas se mostra importante devido ao intercâmbio de espécies com as áreas secas adjacentes, servindo de refúgios para estas espécies nos períodos de seca. A presença da Penelope jacucaca (jacu-caca), que está inserida no livro vermelho de espécies da fauna brasileira ameaçada de extinção, é um dos indicativos que apesar do entorno do parque sofrer com a presença do homem, a área florestal do parque encontra-se em bom estado de preservação. In 12 days of survey, 240 Mackinnon lists was builted. Tyrannidae was the richest bird family, with 20 species, followed by Thamnophilidae (7), Trochilidae (6) and Emberezidae (6). Almost 20% of registered bird species are forest habitat dependent, 38.7% are semi-dependent and 41.4% are independent. The low occurrence of forest dependent species should be associated of antropogenic pressions around the park. The maintenance of these areas is important due to the exchange of species with the adjacent dry areas, serving as refuges for these species during the dry periods. The presence of Penelope jacucaca (jacu-caca), which is inserted in the red book of Brazilian threatened species of fauna, is an indicator that despite the surroundings of the park suffer with the presence of man, the forest area of the park is in good condition preservation.
