Estrogen Receptor Breast Cancer Phenotypes in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Database

Abstract: ERalpha exhibited bimodal age frequency distribution with a dichotomous pattern for age-specific rates, racial, and prognostic factor profiles. Menopause had a greater effect on ERN than ERP. Possible implications for breast carcinogenesis and cancer prevention are discussed in the text.

“…Agespecific incidence rates were calculated by fourteen 5-year age groups (ages 20-24, 25-29 , …, 80-84, and 85+ years). Kernel density estimation produced "smoothed" age distribution curves at diagnosis (or density plots), as previously described [7]. In brief, the kernel smoother estimated the underlying probability density function for breast cancer incidence by age at diagnosis in single years.…”

“…The characteristics of these women are presented in Table 1. In Ireland, primary therapy for 27 One-third of patients in the cohort of women identified were above the age of 75, reflecting the overrepresentation of elderly patients in the HSE-PCRS database but also the higher rates of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer seen in this population. In the year before tamoxifen initiation antidepressant and antipsychotic prescribing rates are comparable to the mean yearly prescribing rates for these drugs in the total HSE-PCRS population of women over the age of 35.…”

“…In general, ERα expression is higher in tumors of older patients, and older or postmenopausal women are more likely to have ER+ tumors than younger women [88,115,116]. However, several studies failed to find significant correlations between ERβ expression and patient age [88,103,104,107].…”
