“…They were trying to understand the abnormality and were aware that menstrual changes in psychotic women needed further explanation (see Jansen et al, 1936;Kafka, 1935;Smith and Smith, 1935;Smith et al, 1937). Lansbury and Hughes (1939) further stated that 'the phenomenon of amenorrhoea which is commonly encountered during the courses of these states, naturally points to the possibility of some disturbances in the production or secretion of the ovarian hormone (estrin)'. They measured estrin levels with somewhat unconventional methods and stated that they found normal levels of this hormone, although menstrual irregularities and amenorrhoea continued to feature clinically.…”
