This study aimed to determine the access and utilization of dental services in a reference center for orofacial defects in the state of Bahia, Brazil. In an interview, a questionnaire was done about socio-demographic information, cleft type, specialized treatments, scheduling time and return of the consultation of 101 patients with nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate and 101 healthy controls. In both groups the age was between 5 to 12 years old. It was observed that individuals with cleft had faster access to the dental service in relation to the control group and shorter scheduling time between the first consultation and their return. Different needs in the use of dental services were observed in the study groups with differences in relation to the specialties (p=0.000). The nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate individuals showed socialization difficulties in the age group between 9 and 12 years and did not present difficulties in accessing primary dental care in specialized service. In conclusion, in this study NSCL±P individuals did not present difficulties in accessing the specialized dental center. To complement the comprehensive care, it is suggested the performance of educational activities of oral health, not yet fully implemented in this multidisciplinary treatment center.

Objective: To understand the experience of young people with orofacial clefts regarding life as an adolescent. Methods: Descriptive, qualitative study, developed in a Brazilian public and tertiary hospital, a reference center in the care of patients with craniofacial anomalies and related syndromes, between February and April 2019. The sample was defined by theoretical saturation. The following inclusion criteria were established: age between ten and 19 years old and having previously operated on orofacial cleft (lip and/or palate). Individuals with fissure associated with syndromes or other malformations were excluded. Data collection was performed through semi-structured interviews, which were audio recorded and transcribed in full. The trigger element was: how has it been for you to experience your adolescence? For the construction of the results, content analysis was used in the thematic modality. Results: Seventeen adolescents participated. From the speeches, three categories were revealed: interacting socially, feeling supported, and experiencing and facing prejudice. Conclusions: The biopsychosocial and conflicting complexity that adolescents with orofacial clefts experience was noticed, as well as the importance of receiving support and establishing modalities of situational coping.

O diagnóstico de uma malformação como a fissura labiopalatina demanda cuidados com o bebê, mas também convoca atenção para a mãe que idealizava um filho esteticamente e funcionalmente perfeito. Diante dessa demanda, a presente pesquisa objetivou compreender o processo de tornar-se mãe de um bebê com fissura labiopalatina e a reelaboração do sentimento materno do “bebê-sonhado” para o “bebê-nascido”. Foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa, do tipo exploratória, que contou com a participação de dez mães de bebês com fissura, que responderam um roteiro de entrevista semiestruturado, cujos dados foram compreendidos por meio de análise lexical no Interface de R pour les Analyses Multimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires (IRaMuTeQ). Os resultados mostram a reação das mães ao diagnóstico, o processo de aceitação do novo filho, a expectativa pela cirurgia e correção da malformação, as preocupações e dificuldades de adaptação às limitações do bebê e ao processo de tratamento. Conclui-se a importância de oferecer o diagnóstico precoce da malformação às mães desde a gestação e auxiliá-las na sua aceitação e no desenvolvimento de uma boa relação da díade mãe-bebê.
