Heritability estimates and genetic correlations were obtained for body weight and scrotal circumference, adjusted, respectively, to 12 (BW12 and SC12) and 18 (BW18 and SC18) months of age, for 10 742 male Nellore cattle. The adjustments to SC12 and SC18 were made using a nonlinear logistic function, while BW12 and BW18 were obtained by linear adjustment. The contemporary groups (CGs) were defined from animals born on the same farm, in the same year and birth season. The mean heritability estimates obtained using the restricted maximum likelihood method in bi-trait analysis were 0.25, 0.25, 0.29 and 0.42 for BW12, BW18, SC12 and SC18, respectively. The genetic correlations were 0.30 6 0.11, 0.21 6 0.13, 0.21 6 0.11, 20.08 6 0.15, 0.16 6 0.12 and 0.89 6 0.04 between the traits BW12 and BW18; BW12 and SC12; BW12 and SC18; BW18 and SC12; BW18 and SC18; and SC12 and SC18. The heritability for SC18 was considerably greater than for SC12, suggesting that this should be included as a selection criterion. The genetic correlation between BW18 and SC12 was close to zero, indicating that these traits did not influence each other. The contrary occurred between SC12 and SC18, indicating that selection using one of these could alter the other. Because of the mean magnitudes of heritabilities in the various measurements of weight and scrotal perimeter, it is suggested that the practice of individual selection for these traits is possible.

ABSTRACT. We evaluated the genetic association of growth traits [weight adjusted to 205 days of age (W205), 365 days of age (W365), and 550 days of age (W550); weight gain between 205 days of age and 365 days of age (WG1) and between 365 days of age and 550 days of age (WG2)] and reproductive traits [age at first calving (AFC); first calving interval (FCI)] with stayability in the herd (STAY), using Bayesian inference in linear and threshold models. We defined STAY as the probability of a cow calving three or more times before the age of 76 months, given that she had calved at least once. We assigned binary codes (0, failure; 1, success) to each female. We used a sire model for analysis and formed different contemporary groups for the investigated traits. We analyzed the results by applying a two-trait sire model that included STAY (threshold trait) and linear traits (W205, W365, W550, WG1, WG2, AFC, and FCI). We used 14957 Genetic association of growth traits with stayability ©FUNPEC-RP www.funpecrp.com.br Genetics and Molecular Research 14 (4): 14956-14966 (2015) Gibbs sampling to estimate variance components and heritabilities. In all the analyses, we found that the mean heritability estimates for STAY were of moderate magnitude (0.20-0.25). The mean heritabilities for W205, W365, W550, WG1, WG2, AFC, and FCI were 0.20, 0.23, 0.39, 0.08, 0.14, 0.12, and 0.11, respectively. We observed wide variation in the posterior distributions of genetic correlations; however, with the exception of those obtained for the reproductive traits, the mean estimates were of low magnitude. Selection for WG2 can results in favorable correlated response in STAY.

ABSTRACT. Genetic parameters for traits related to postweaning growth in Braunvieh cattle, reared under tropical and sub-tropical conditions in Brazil, were studied. Weight traits were weight at 365 days of age (W365, N = 4055), at 450 days (W450, N = 3453), and at 550 days (W550, N = 1946), while weight gains were gain from weaning to 365 days of age (WGW365, N = 3060), from weaning to 450 days (WGW450, N = 2764), from weaning to 550 days (WGW550, N = 1531), from 365 to 550 days of age (WG365550, N = 1528), from 365 to 450 days (WG365450, N = 2401), and from 450 to 550 days (WG450550, N = 1563). A full animal model was used for estimating the variance components, using the MTDFREML software. The dataset contained 18,688 animals with phenotypic measures and 35,188 animals in the relationship matrix. Heritability estimates for postweaning weights decreased with age. For W365, W450 and W550, respectively, the direct heritability estimates were 0.29 ± 0.061, 0.25 ± 0.057, 0.16 ± 0.060, maternal heritability was 0.20 ± 0.035, 0.18 ± 0.035, 0.13 ± 0.052, and total heritability was 0.30, 0.35, 0.26. In this breed, maternal influence was found to be important up to 550 days of age. The greater genetic correlations between weights were observed for weights measured at shorter intervals. A large environmental effect was observed for weight gain between weaning and 550 days; this effect was greater for the gains between 365 and 550 days.
