Estimation on the Concentration of Suspended Solids From Turbidity in the Water of Two Sub-Basins in the Doce River Basin

Abstract: Knowing the relationship between the total suspended solids concentration (TSS), turbidity in the waters, and that turbidity analysis can be done faster and in less expensive way, this study aimed to obtain mathematical model to estimate the total suspended solids (TSS) concentration from the turbidity values for waters of Doce river basin. For this purpose, it was used the water quality database of the Minas Gerais Institute of Water Management (IGAM). The data were pre-treated using the adjusted boxplot tech… Show more

“…CONAMA 357/2005 does not consider this parameter for water quality. Although there is a linear relation between TSS and turbidity, we observed lesser association in the dry season (Oliveira et al 2018). Turbidity expresses, the apparent number of particles present in a water body, as determined by a beam of light that passes through the sample, quantifying the density (Toniolo 2016).…”

“…According to Hannouche et al [ 52 ], the study confirmed the existence of a strong linear relationship between turbidity and TSS within a combined sewer system. Moreover, following the high correlation between turbidity and TSS, Oliveira et al [ 53 ], suggested that measurement of turbidity can be a faster and economically efficient option for estimating TSS.…”

“…From the SS and turbidity analyses, it was observed that similar trends followed in terms of greater production efficiency in the presence of the self-cleaning system. Likewise, there is a relationship between SS and turbidity, as studied by Oliveira et al [68], in which they observed that a decrease in solids necessarily implied a decrease in turbidity in the water.…”

“…SS is a parameter that indicated the degradation of pollutants present in wastewater. In addition, they can act as a reservoir for pathogenic microorganisms due to their ease of adhering to particle surfaces [68]. Consequently, determining the relationship that SS could have with other global parameters, as other authors have done by associating suspended solids with turbidity, is necessary.…”
