Estimation of water retention and availability in soils of Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract: SUMMARYDispersed information on water retention and availability in soils may be compiled in databases to generate pedotransfer functions. The objectives of this study were: to generate pedotransfer functions to estimate soil water retention based on easily measurable soil properties; to evaluate the efficiency of existing pedotransfer functions for different geographical regions for the estimation of water retention in soils of Rio Grande do Sul (RS); and to estimate plant-available water capacity based on so… Show more

“…In the fourth sampling, PAWC was higher, but it did not show a clear trend among samplings at 0.10 to 0.20 layer. Overall, PAWC values were close to those observed by Tueche and Hauser (2011) in a clay soil, in Cameroon, cultivated with maize and with those generated using pedotransfer functions by Reichert et al (2009b) for Brazilian clay soils.…”

“…The general MEs, for the potential of -33 kPa at the depths from 0 to 20 and 40 to 70 cm, were 0.08 and 0.06 dag kg -1 , and for the -1500 kPa potential, were -1.08 and -0.07 dag kg -1 , respectively, showing the trend of the general PTFs to overestimate the moisture value for the -33 kPa potential and underestimate it for the potential of -1500 kPa. That same behavior was also verified in the works of Nebel et al (2010), Reichert et al (2009), andTomasella et al (2000).…”

“…That is associated to the higher clay content at that depth, mainly due to the significant occurrence of soils with a textural B horizon (PV, PVA and PA) and a planic B (SX). The clay increases the specific area of the soil matrix and as a consequence, favors the water adsorption and retention processes (REICHERT, et al, 2009). Ciênc.…”

“…Soils with finer particles (clay or silt) and higher organic matter content have higher water retention, because organic matter is important for water availability and retention (Reichert et al, 2009b). Furthermore, Klein and Libardi (2000) report that the soil structure and texture, type and amount of clay, and organic matter content are the factors that affect water availability to crops.…”
