Estimation of Variation of Surface Area and Volume of Water in Fishing Bays of Lake Baikal

Abstract

The research estimated the water surface area and volume of the bay Proval and Posol'skiy sor in Lake Baikal by using the QGIS geographic information system. The research indicated that the bays in question were very sensitive to changes in the water level of Lake Baikal. Surface area has been found to be more sensitive to changes in water level than volume. These indicators are important for the estimation of the receiving capacity of an area and can be used to predict the quantity of receiving capacity in low water periods. The results obtained may be useful in taking measures to stabilize the population of Baikal omul and its rational use.
