Estimation of ultimate strength of continuous stiffened panel under combined transverse thrust and lateral pressure Part 1: Continuous plate

Abstract: A simplified method to estimate the ultimate strength of a continuous plate, typical in ship bottom plating, subjected to combined transverse thrust and lateral pressure is developed. A series of elastic/ elastoplastic large deflection finite element analysis (FEA) of a continuous plate supported along the lines of longitudinal stiffeners and transverse frames is performed. Attention is focused on the effect of a continuity of plating on its buckling and ultimate strengths, while the previous studies are mainl… Show more

“…37 Although it is assumed to be in a buckling mode in some research studies, the real shape of the initial deflection can be considered to be in a socalled thin-horse mode. 38,39 There are also different methods in order to establish such a complex thin-horse mode of the initial deflection in the plate and stiffener elements of the stiffened plates. One of the methods recently adopted by some researchers in a benchmark study on the ultimate strength analysis of stiffened aluminium plates 19 is selected in this paper.…”
