Estimation of the Respiratory Rate from Localised ECG at Different Auscultation Sites

Abstract: The respiratory rate (RR) is a vital physiological parameter in prediagnosis and daily monitoring. It can be obtained indirectly from Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals using ECG-derived respiration (EDR) techniques. As part of the study in designing an early cardiac screening system, this work aimed to study whether the accuracy of ECG derived RR depends on the auscultation sites. Experiments were conducted on 12 healthy subjects to obtain simultaneous ECG (at auscultation sites and Lead I as reference) and resp… Show more

“…The dominant frequency in all the observed signals is around 1 Hz, illustrating the possibility of extracting heart rate information, typically between 1 and 1.67 Hz in healthy adults, from all signals [45]. The carotid and SSN signals also reveal frequencies below 0.5 Hz, corresponding to the breathing rate (BR), which in resting healthy adults can lie between 0.2 and 0.3 Hz [46]. Comparing the ECG signal time-frequency scalograms in Fig.…”

“…A FFT of the quasi-DC components were acquired, and the signal's fundamental frequency was isolated which corresponded to the RR. SS-ECG based RR was obtained from applying a 0.05-0.5 Hz bandpass filter to remove artifacts that were not related to respiration [6].…”
