Estimation of Serum Ferritin in Mucormycosis Patients and Prognostication Based on the Ferritin Value

Abstract: Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been implicated in a variety of vulnerable bacterial and fungal diseases. Mucormycosis is a life-threatening infection caused by fungi belonging to the class Zygomycetes and the order Mucorales. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the level of serum ferritin level in mucormycosis patients and to prognosticate them based on those values. Materials and methods: This … Show more

“… 93 A prospective study by Anand et al in 2022 that compared serum ferritin values among COVID-19 and non-COVID patients demonstrated a higher serum ferritin level among COVID-patients, and mucormycosis patients had higher serum ferritin levels, especially among the non-survivors and critically ill patients. 94 Similar findings were observed by Rao et al and Bhadania et al 95 , 96 …”

“…A la alta mortalidad ocasionada por el SHF, la exceresis incompleta y tardía de la lesión, se une la ocasionada por la mucormicosis, en la cual se ha reportado una relación directa entre niveles de ferritina en sangre y mortalidad en este tipo de pacientes, tal como pudo comprobarse en el caso aquí reportado cuya cifra de ferritina fue mayor de 40 000 ng/mL 11 .…”
