Aim:The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of mobile phone waves and Wi-Fi on electrolytes and oxidative stress indices of saliva. Materials and methods:A case group of 20 Wi-Fi and mobile phone users and a control group of 20 deaf people were selected. Saliva samples were obtained from both of these groups. Study variables, including the electrolytes and oxidative stress indices of saliva, were measured. The independent two-sample t-test was used to analyze the data. The statistical significance was defined at p < 0.05. Results:The mean sodium and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the case group were higher than in the control group. The results also showed that there was no significant difference between sodium and potassium levels (p = 0.163 and p = 0.892, respectively) and the oxidative stress of total antioxidant (TAO) and MDA (p = 0.138 and p = 0.115, respectively) in either of the two groups. However, there was a significant difference in salivary nitric oxide (NO) levels (p = 0.04) between the case and control groups. Conclusion:Electromagnetic waves affected the saliva composition to an extent that it caused a significant decrease in the NO levels of the case group.Clinical significance: Nitric oxide acts as an active radical in nonspecific defense mechanisms in the oral cavity. So, reduction of NO with mobile phone and Wi-Fi waves can cause disruption in the human defense system. These results illustrate the necessity of reducing contact with these waves.

Aging is accompanied by physical dysfunction and physiologic degeneration that occurs over an individual's lifetime. Human teeth, like many other organs, inevitably undergo chronological aging and agerelated changes throughout the lifespan, resulting in a substantial need for preventive, restorative as well as periodontal dental care. This is particularly the case for seniors at 65 years of age and those older but economically disadvantaged. Dental aging not only interferes with normal chewing and digestion, but also affects daily appearance and interpersonal communications. Further dental aging can incur the case of multiple disorders such as oral cancer, encephalitis, and other systemic diseases. In the next decades or even hundreds of years, the proportion of the elderly in the global population will continue to rise, a tendency that attracts increasing attention across multiple scientific and medical disciplines. Dental aging will bring a variety of problems to the elderly themselves and poses serious challenges to the medical profession and social system. A reduced, but functional dentition comprising 20 teeth in occlusion has been proposed as a measurement index of successful dental aging. Healthy dental aging is critical to healthy aging, from both medical and social perspectives. To date, biomedical research on the causes, processes and regulatory mechanisms of dental aging is still in its infancy. In this article, updated insights into typical manifestations, associated pathologies, preventive strategies and molecular changes of dental aging are provided, with future research directions largely projected.

CAPE Improves Vanin-1/AKT/miRNA-203 Signaling Pathways in DSS-induced Ulcerative Colitis

Introduction: Ulcerative colitis (UC) and other inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are common chronic, inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases. Due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, polyphenols are beneficial in the treatment of IBD. Caffeine acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) has been shown to have cytotoxic, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. This study focuses on the biochemical and molecular levels of the mode of action of CAPE in DSS-induced UC in rats. Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were distributed into five groups, with six rats in each group: group I was administered 3 mL of distilled water orally, group II was administered CAPE (10 mg/kg.b.w.) orally, group III was administered 5% DSS orally, group IV was administered 5% DSS and CAPE (10 mg/kg.b.w.) orally; and group V was administered 5% DSS and sulfasalazine (100 mg/kg b.w.) orally. Results: Individually, oral treatment with CAPE or sulfasalazine significantly ameliorated body weight, DAI score, and colon length in DSS-induced colitis and raised blood PLT count, NO, NF-kβ , and vitamin C levels. In addition, animals given CAPE had a considerable increase in colon GSH, GPx, CAT, and SOD levels compared with rats given DSS. Compared with the DSS control group, colon TBAR, IL-6, and INF-γ were lower in the CAPE-treated rats. Histopathological examination revealed that CAPE treatment caused tissue injury and improved vanin-1, AKT, and miRNA-203 genes in the distal colon and triggered apoptosis. Conclusions: The gastroprotective impact of CAPE was more noticeable than sulfasalazine. CAPE treatment caused biochemical and histopathological improvements, indicating that CAPE may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in colitis; therefore, CAPE may be a potential therapeutic agent for the amelioration of IBD. This finding is promising for future therapies and research goals.
