ESTIMATION OF POTENTIAL OCEANIC REGIONS AND POSSIBLE CO2 AMOUNTS FOR STORAGE USING SELF-SEALING OF CO2 HYDRATE AROUND JAPAN

Abstract: Japan aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 as a countermeasure against global warming. As part of its policy, by 2030, the Japanese government plans to put into action carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage (CCS) initiatives. On the other hand, site surveys for deep saline aquifers (DSA) in Japan are underway. This paper shows the potential for CO 2 storage using self-sealing of CO2 hydrate as a breakthrough to increase site options and the possible amounts of CO2 to be stored around Ja… Show more

“…Japan covers an area of only 3.8 million square kilometers (61st in the world), and its territorial waters and exclusive economic zones reach 4.47 million square kilometers (6th in the world) [1,2]. According to the Fisheries Agency [3], more than 90% of the fishery operators in Japan in the marine fisheries and aquaculture industries are private operators.…”

“…The project uses CO 2 hydrates to store the captured CO 2 injected into the sediments at around 1000 meters. In addition to these projects, several other research centers in Japan are actively researching CO 2 hydrates. ,, China heavily relies on coal for energy and industry, making the carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology crucial for decarbonization. China is working hard to develop CO 2 EOR projects to utilize and store its abundant industrial CO 2 and achieve its ambitious CO 2 reduction goals.…”
