Estimation of Nitrate Concentrations in Groundwater Using a Whole Farm Nitrogen Budget

Abstract: Contamination of groundwater under agricultural land by NO3 is influenced by the kind of farming system. One possible method of selecting farming systems that result in less NO3 leaching is to calculate whole farm N budgets, that are simplified by assuming soil‐N remains constant from one cycle of a rotation to the next. This method was applied to two model crop rotations using average crop yield data for two regions of Ontario, and to a cash‐crop farm and a dairy farm using information on purchases, sales, an… Show more

“…The N fixed in the shoots reached a maximum of 155 or 192 kg N ha -1 , as calculated by the isotopic dilution and difference methods, respectively. Based on the average soybean yield in this experiment (3476 ± 107 kg ha -1 ), the mass of N fixed predicted by the equation of Barry et al (1993) was 183 ± 9 kg N ha -1 , close to the value from the difference method.…”

“…The average amount of N fixed by a soybean crop and present in the aboveground tissues was about 80 kg N ha -1 in central Ontario (Ravuri and Hume 1992). Barry et al (1993) developed a linear regression between N fixed by soybean (shoots plus roots) and grain yield in Ontario. Assuming the average grain yield of 2.42 Mg ha -1 they estimated that the N fixed was 98 ± 32 kg ha -1 .…”

“…N fixation by soybeans was estimated from the relationship between grain yield and total fixed N (Goss et al 1994). Estimates of atmospheric (wet and dry) N deposition were from Barry et al (1993).…”

“…This allows the diagnosis of structural excess of nitrogen in a farm [3] or in a water catchment basin [14] when there are major terms in the balance (generally mineral or organic nitrogen fertilization, N exports). This method cannot be used in low input farming systems where all the components of the balance are minor but none can be neglected [23].…”
