Estimation of leaf area by mobile application: Fast and accurate method

Abstract: There are numerous techniques for the estimation of leaf area. Every technique has some advantages and disadvantages over one another. This study proposed a new technique for the leaf area estimation i.e. mobile application (Petiole). It is a free of cost mobile application. The mobile application was used for the estimation of the leaf area of six different plant species. It was observed that error percentage for the leaf area estimation was recorded less than 4% in case of banyan, Jamun and lemon plant leaf.… Show more

“…However, an average leaf area was 29.56×10 4 mm 2 with standard deviation (6.63), but negative error revealed that image-based technique gives an average higher leaf area results as compared to standard grid count method as shown in table 4. The similar negative results are also reported by several researchers (Singh et 2021a(Singh et , 2021b), but their results was based on comparison between grid count and mobile application based leaf area techniques. However, the leaf area of the tree influences the performance of the tunnel sprayer, higher leaf area generally allows more spray deposits on the peripheral canopy of the tree, but extreme dense canopy reduce spray penetration of spray liquid at the center of the tree to be delivered by the sprayer.…”

“…The same procedure was repeated for the second and third instars. The leaf area (mm 2 ) consumed by the FAW larval stages was recorded after 6 h and 24 h using a mobile application (Petiole) [33]. With the application downloaded alongside its calibration pad and installed, the android mobile phone (Tecno Camon 17, Shenzhen, China) was fixed at the optimal height (11 cm) above the calibration pad using a measuring stand.…”
