Estimation of laser cutting process efficiency

Abstract: The efficiency of laser cutting processes is generally treated in technical literature in qualitative terms, referring to ways to increase it. The present paper is focussed on metal cutting by laser and proposes some quantitative means to estimate the process efficiency. For certain working conditions – machine-tool, material to be processed, specific costs and other – the effectiveness and the specific power consumption are computed based on the main cutting parameters: laser power and cutting speed. The prop… Show more

“…The conducted literature review and its analysis show that after introducing ultra-sound oscillations into the zone of processing, increase in productivity of cutting optical slugs and other hard and brittle materials is observed (by 10-30%), as well as improvement in the quality of the machined surfaces -reduction of the parameter by 10-20%. The detailed clarification of all the factors, influencing on the process of cutting such materials necessitates to perform a series of experiments to confirm the results from the studies [1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11]. From the analysis of the available up to the moment research works it has been established that the oscillations depend on the type of the used vibrator and have a significant importance in the formation of the quality indicators of the surfaces, processed by cutting.…”

“…There are many types of laser cutting process solid laser, liquid laser and gaseous laser cutting among which solid state lasers CO 2 based laser cutting are mostly used for steel machining beside O 2 or Nitrogen based laser cutting machining. Because their high power and suitable properties needed for the cutting of the material [5]. Beside cutting operation, laser cutting also capable for drilling, micro machining, welding, sintering and heat treatment [6].…”
