Estimation of Indoor Radon and Its Progeny in Dwellings of Akoko Region, Ondo State, Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract: Radon gas is by far the most important source of ionizing radiation among those that are of natural origin. In this study, radon was measured in some homes built of different types of building materials in Akoko region of Ondo state, Nigeria. The test was conducted using Accustar alpha track long term passive test devices containing CR-39 solid state nuclear track detector foil. The detectors were exposed for a period of six months. After removal the detectors were subsequently etched electrochemically and cou… Show more

“…This result differs from that of Garba et al (2013) [22] , who discovered that the mean radon concentration was 12.29 Bq/L. The results of Adeola and Isaac (2017) [23] , who discovered that the mean radon concentration was 35.54 Bq/L, are also out of sync.…”

“…In accordance with the findings of their study, the 222 Rn content in borehole sources is higher than that in well water sources, and both were above the USEPA-set MCL of 11.1 Bq/L. In another research, the estimation of indoor radon and its progeny in dwellings of Akoko Area, Ondo State, Southern Nigeria, was undertaken by Adeola and Isaac in 2017 [23] . Accustar alpha-track long-term passive test devices with CR-39 solid-state nuclear track detector foil were used for the test.…”

“…The building had no ventilation at night and all the doors and windows were locked during the day, preventing radon gas from escaping into the space outside. 222Rn is major risk factor for lung cancer after smoking according to Asere, et al [36]. This makes determining the concentration of radon activity inside of dwellings an important health concern.…”
