Estimation of IgG and IgM brucella antibodies in infected and non-infected persons by a radioimmune technique.

Abstract: SUMMARY Sera from 105 blood donors and eight patients with brucellosis were examined for anti-brucella IgG and IgM by a radioimmune technique. A pooled standard was used for comparison and evaluation. The upper limit of the 99% confidence interval on the mean of both immunoglobulin classes in blood donor sera was below 7 units/ml. Antibody response was shown in three acute, two relapsing, two chronic, and one asymptomatic cases. Values of up to 300 units/ml of both classes were found in the acute cases. Chroni… Show more

“…Moreover, sensitivity of blood culture is often low, changing from 50 to 90% based on the period, Brucella species, culture medium, amount of disseminating bacteria, and the blood culture technique used [4][5][6] . Therefore, sero-diagnostic tests are mostly used especially in people with persistent infection and recurrences, and in the regions where antibodies against brucellosis are prevalent [4,[7][8][9] . Most frequently applied diagnostic tests for human brucellosis are the Serum Agglutination Test (SAT), the Coombs anti-Brucella test, the Rose Bengal test (RBT), and Complement Fixation Test (CFT) [7,8] .…”

“…Most frequently applied diagnostic tests for human brucellosis are the Serum Agglutination Test (SAT), the Coombs anti-Brucella test, the Rose Bengal test (RBT), and Complement Fixation Test (CFT) [7,8] . For a long time, radioimmunoassay [9,10] and enzyme immunoassay [7,[11][12][13][14][15] have also been used. The diagnostic performance of SAT and Brucellacapt has been studied thoroughly [16][17][18][19] and defined as useful tests.…”

During the last decade, radioimmunoassay [7,8] and enzyme immunoassay [9][10] tests have also been used. These present technical difficulties since they require skilled personnel and high-cost material.…”
