Estimation of greenhouse gases emission factors of China's nitrogen, phosphate and potash fertilizers

Abstract: As fossil fuel based chemical products, synthetic fertilizers are highly energy鄄intensive and therefore highly carbon鄄intensive products as well. Fertilizers are one of the most important modern agricultural materials for enhancing crop yields. The manufacture of fertilizers is also a considerable indirect greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission source related to agricultural activities. To feed its huge population, China has raised its average fertilizer application level from 86.7 kg / hm 2 in 1980 to 346.1 kg / hm… Show more

“…As a result, as long as the soil nutrient level remains constant, chemical fertilizers must be used in conjunction with organic fertilizers. Only 38% of the nutrients in our farmland are now derived from organic fertilizers [32], and when compared to Denmark, where 70% of the nitrogen nutrients in farmland are derived from organic fertilizers [33], China's level of organic [35]. Furthermore, long-term organic fertilizer application not only sustains crop yields, but also enhances soil carbon sequestration and increases soil organic carbon content [36].…”

“…Where 𝐸 is the CO2 equivalent emission, the unit is t CO2eq, Ei is the carbon emission of each agricultural material in the agricultural production process, Qi is the quantity of each agricultural material (including fertilizer, pesticide, agricultural machinery, agricultural irrigation and ploughing), and αi is the carbon emission coefficient of each agricultural material, with reference to the relevant literature [13][14][15][16][17][18] (Table 1). 44/12 is the conversion factor of carbon equivalent (CE) to CO2 equivalent.…”

“…Some studies at home and abroad believe that [31][32][33], the land use of sludge stabilization products can replace part of phosphate fertilizer to achieve carbon emission reduction. It has been reported that the comprehensive carbon emission coefficient of phosphate fertilizer products in China is 0.63 t CO 2 /t P 2 O 5 [34]. Assuming that the phosphorus content in sludge stabilized products is 4%, of which about 50% is equivalent to that of phosphate fertilizer, the emission reduction will be about 2.8t CO 2 per 100 t sludge stabilized products (calculated as dry sludge).…”
