Estimation of granite radiation hazards of Deh Siahan village in Rafsanjan city

Abstract: There are villages in Rafsanjan city (Kerman, Iran) that are nearby or located on radioactive granite rock, unfortunately. In this study, by measuring the 232Th, 238U and 40K radioactive elements, the amount of radiation hazards caused by radioactive granite rock. For the residents Deh Siahan village has been investigated. The results show that the radiation hazard parameters of Deh Siahan village are higher than the permissible values announced by the UNSCEAR reports. For example, the total ef… Show more

“…Granitic rocks are coarse-grained intrusive igneous rocks composed mostly of quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase feldspar. They form from magma with a high content of silica and alkali metal oxides that slowly cools and solidifies underground (Khezripour et al 2022). They are common in the continental crust of the Earth, where they are found in various sizes and shapes of igneous intrusions.…”

“…However, granitic rocks may also contain natural radionuclides, such as 40 K, 232 Th, 226 Ra, and their decay products, which emit gamma rays and may pose potential health risks to humans and non-humans. The concentration and distribution of these radionuclides depend on the mineralogy, geochemistry, and geological history of the granitic rocks (Khezripour et al 2022). Moreover, gold mineralization is closely associated with the granitic rocks in such a way that the mineralization is either hosted by or occurs immediately adjacent to the granite intrusions (Botros 2015).…”

“…There are different methods for measuring the specific activity of these elements [2]. One of these methods is the use of CsI (Tl) scintillation detectors, which have been reported in several reports on their use for this purpose [3,4]. Usually, after calculating the specific activity of the elements, radiation hazard equations are used to calculate the radiation hazard parameters [3]- [5].…”
