Estimation of genetic trends in French Large White pigs from 1977 to 1998 for growth and carcass traits using frozen semen12

Abstract: Genetic trends for growth, feed efficiency, composition, and morphometry of carcasses were estimated in a French Large White (LW) pig population using frozen semen. Two groups of pigs were produced by inseminating LW sows with either stored, frozen semen from 17 LW boars born in 1977 or with semen from 23 LW boars born in 1998. In each group, 15 males and 90 females were randomly chosen and mated to produce approximately 1,000 pigs/group. These pigs were performance tested with individual ADFI and serial BW an… Show more

“…A comparison of the modern intensively selected pig and the unselected line representing the pig population existing 20 years ago (Oksbjerg et al 2000, Tribout et al 2003, and selection experiments (Sonesson et al 1998, Cameron et al 1999) have shown some deterioration in water holding capacity, meat colour, tenderness and pH. Meat quality is a breeding goal in pig improvement programmes in many countries (Schwörer et al 1994, Hovenier et al 1995.…”

“…The pH u and colour are optimum traits. Colour heterogeneity among muscles is also undesirable and, for ham it is assessed by visual standards (National pork producer council 1999) or by a bi-colour index (Tribout et al 2003).…”

“…Some advantages include increased time to test for pathogens and fertility and additional time for distribution of semen with high genetic merit (Tribout et al, 2010;Knox, 2011). However, <1% of porcine AI use frozen-thawed boar spermatozoa because the economic advantages do not compensate for the reduction in fertility caused by cryopreservation damage (Johnson et al, 2000;Knox et al, 2008;Rath et al, 2009).…”

“…Intaratham et al (2008) studied birth weight and weaning weight of Northeastern Thai Indigenous cattle line for genetic trend and concluded that positive response to selection was found for both traits. The estimated genetic trends basically contrast between the 2 levels of fixed effect in a linear model, and they are therefore much more robust than annual averages of BLUP EBV, which are known to be sensitive to the data modeling and to the genetic parameters used as priors (Tribout, et al, 2010). Phenotypic trends in animal performance can be readily quantified from information collected in research or field populations.…”
