Estimation of genetic parameters and genetic trends for reproductive traits in Saanen goats

Abstract: The study was conducted on Saanen goats raised in Croatia. The object of the study was to determine the average litter size (LS), birth weight (BW) and total litter weight (TLW). The study included a total of 2 500 goats among which 1 786 were phenotyped. A total of 6 349 records for BW and 4 256 records for LS and TLW were used in descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Determined averages for LS, BW and TLW were 1.74 lambs, 3.27 kg and 5.65 kg, respectively. Twinning and tripling rates were 3… Show more

“…Results of the current study show that genetic progress of LS in Markhoz goats was actually zero during the past two decades. Similar estimate of genetic trend has been reported in Saanen goats in Croatia (Kasap et al, 2013). This observation is due to low heritability of LS and thus, unfeasibility of genetic progress by common phenotypic selection methods.…”

“…The number of kids per calving from ILEG is higher than that of goats in Romania, with average kids per calving of 1.30 kids/doe (Pascal and Zaharia, 2016) and 1.43 kids/doe of Serrana goat (Margatho et al, 2019), 1.63 kids/doe of Begait goat (Abraham et al, 2018). It was almost the same as the average number of kids at German Improved Fawn goats with the kids per calving around1.70 kids/doe (Samardzija et al, 2013), and the ordinary calving of Saanen goats were 1.74 kids/doe (Kasap et al, 2013).…”

“…Crepaldy et al (1999) also reported bigger litter size of 1.6 kids/doe of Alpine breed raised in Italy. However, Kasap et al (2012) obtained almost exact value for litter size of 1.46 kids/doe when investigating reproductive parameters of Alpine goats in Croatia. In primiparous does, prolificacy of 125% was lower than in mature does which is consistent with numerous statements that litter size is influenced by parity (Amoah and Gelaye, 1990;Awemu et al, 1999;Kasap et al, 2012).…”
