The study was conducted to estimate the stability, adaptability, productivity and genetic parameters in Slash pine second-generation half-sib families, considering phenotypic traits in early age. Forty-four families from a first generation seed orchard in Colombo-PR, Brazil, were used in this study. Two progenies tests were established in a randomized complete block design. The first test was implemented in March 2009 in Ribeirão Branco, São Paulo state, containing 40 blocks, one tree per plot, 44 treatments (progenies) and 6 controls. Another test was implemented in Ponta Grossa, Paraná state, using the same experimental design and number of plants per plot, and with 24 treatments, 32 blocks. The growth traits evaluated were total height, diameter at breast height (dbh) and wood volume, within five years. The form traits evaluated were stem form, branch thickness, branch angle, number of branches, fork and fox tail five years after planting. Deviance analysis and estimates of stability, adaptability, productivity and genetic parameters were performed using the methods of best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP) and residual maximum likelihood (REML). There was significant variation among progenies for growth and form traits. Considerable genetic variation was detected mainly for wood volume. High coefficients of genetic variation and heritability showed low environmental influence on phenotypic variation, which is important for the prediction of genetic gain by selection. Crosses between different progenies individuals groups will be prioritized for obtaining heterotics genotypes and increase the probability of obtaining high specific combining ability.

Successful development of an appropriate tree breeding strategy and wood utilization requires information on wood properties. This study was therefore conducted to assess wood density and mechanical properties of Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gordon grown in Malawi. Wood samples from six families of P. kesiya at the age of 30 years were used for the study. The estimated mean wood density, Modulus of Elasticity (MoE), Modulus of Rupture (MoR) and moisture content were 0.593˘0.001 g/cm 3 , 13.46˘0.07 GPa, 113.67˘0.57 MPa and 12.08%˘0.03%, respectively. There were statistically significant (p < 0.001) differences in wood density and mechanical properties along the radial direction and stem height. Wood density and mechanical properties increased from pith to bark and decreased from the butt upwards. There were no significant (p > 0.05) differences in wood density and mechanical properties among the families. This is an indication that any tree among the families can be selected for tree improvement programs if density is considered as a variable. Wood density had a strong positive significant linear relationship with both MoE (r = 0.790; p < 0.001) and MoR (r = 0.793; p < 0.001). This suggests that it has the potential to simultaneously improve the wood density and mechanical properties of this species. Therefore, controlling wood density for the tree improvement program of P. kesiya in Malawi would have a positive impact on mechanical properties.

ABSTRAKUji keturunan nyawai (Ficus variegata Blume) dibangun di Mangunan, Bantul, Yogyakarta dengan sistem subline menggunakan Randomized Completely Block Design. Sub galur Lombok terdiri dari 17 famili dan sub galur CilacapPangandaran 19 famili. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui variasi pertumbuhan dan parameter genetik sub galur tersebut umur 2 tahun setelah penanaman. Analisis varians digunakan untuk mengetahui pengaruh famili terhadap persen hidup, tinggi, dan diameter. Analisis komponen varians digunakan untuk menaksir koefisien variasi genetik dan nilai heritabilitas. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan persen hidup pada kisaran 89,01-91,42%. Pengaruh famili terhadap variasi tinggi dan dameter sangat nyata pada kedua sub galur. Taksiran nilai koefisien variasi genetik pada sifat tinggi dan diameter kedua sub galur pada kisaran 4,41%-9,04% atau termasuk kategori sedang. Heritabilitas individu untuk sifat tinggi pada kisaran 0,15-0,22 dan sifat diameter pada kisaran 0,18-0,09; taksiran nilai heritabilitas famili untuk sifat tinggi pada kisaran 0,49-0,60 dan sifat diameter pada kisaran 0,29-0,66.Kata kunci: Nyawai, Ficus variegata, uji keturunan, pertumbuhan, parameter genetik.
