Estimation of forest degradation distribution using landsat sattelite imagery in Besitang forest landscape

The intensity of wildlife conflicts with humans has recently tended to increase. The conflict between humans and wildlife is a problem that can cause material losses and loss of life. Conflicts can occur because of the lack of food resources in the forest. Another factor is the high rate of land conversion; forest ecosystems are converted into plantation land. This problem is worrying because numerous wild animals descend into human settlement areas to find food and cause conflict with humans. This study was conducted in March 2021 in nine villages around Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP), Management Section of National Park (MNSP) VI Besitang. The purpose of this study was to calculate how much loss was caused by wildlife-human conflicts in the village around the MNSP VI Besitang, GLNP. This study found that conflicts between humans and wildlife are incredibly detrimental. The method used in this research is an open interview with the community and key respondents with purposive sampling, counting crop damage, livestock eaten, harvest failure, building damage, and fatalities caused by human-wildlife conflict. This study also includes the time lost by the community due to the conflict, which differs from similar studies. The study’s results found a value economic loss in Besitang is Rp. 224,254,550 /year.

The conflict between humans and wildlife tends to increase lately, especially the human-elephant conflict (HEC). The high level of human activity around the forest causes an increase in the rate of forest destruction. The opening of agricultural land in and around the forest, causing the elephant habitat to become narrow so that the elephant looks for new space to move to community land. HEC occurs when elephants and humans fight over the same resource. The purpose of this study is to obtain information on the characteristics of the spatial distribution of human-elephant conflict in Besitang. The method used in this study is the analysis of HEC points overlay with several biophysical variables using GIS. The results of this study show that the distribution of HEC occurs mostly in sloping areas with low topography and areas relatively close to forests, plantations / agricultural communities, settlements, and rivers.

The existence of Besitang forests is under threat of deforestation so that its area continues to decline. Besitang forest is part of the Gunung Leuser National Park. Efforts to prevent deforestation need to be carried out with a proper deforestation policy. As a first step, it is crucial to identify the drivers of deforestation. This study aims to obtain information on the drivers of deforestation in Besitang forests from 2000 to 2016. The method used is to do spatial modeling using GIS and binary logistic regression. The results of the research show that elevation factors, distance from settlements, and distance from oil palm plantations are factors that trigger deforestation that occurs in Besitang forests.
