Characterization and development of hydrocarbon reservoirs depends on the classification of lithological patterns from well log data. In thin reservoir units, limited vertical data impedes the efficient classification of lithologies. We present a test case of petrofacies classification using machine learning models in a thin interval of finely laminated limestones using pseudo-well data created over outcrops (radiometric and unconfined compressive strength logs). We tested Gaussian naïve Bayes (GNB) and support vector machine (SVM) techniques to classify eight petrofacies types, divided into two groups. The objective was to observe the capacity of some well-known models to classify petrofacies with a high-frequency vertical variation of diagenetic heterogeneities in an extreme scenario within a thin sedimentary interval. The GNB was less effective (F 1 score of 0.29), and the SVM achieved the best results in classifying the main facies patterns (F 1 = 0.47). However, the GNB performed better when the analysis was focused on distinguishing the two main groups of petrofacies. The results demonstrate that high-frequency facies variations present a challenge to the automatic identification of lithofacies, mainly due to local variations in horizontal heterogeneities (on the mm-to cm-scale) created by depositional and diagenetic processes, which impact the flow in porous media.

A Bacia do Araripe, localizada na fronteira entre os estados de Pernambuco, Piauí e Ceará, no Nordeste do Brasil, apresenta um modelo evolutivo clássico para a compreensão dos eventos de separação do Gondwana durante o Período Cretáceo. Além disso, a bacia também contém unidades de grande relevância paleontológica e econômica. A maior parte dos estudos geológicos e paleontológicos realizados na bacia concentrou-se na margem nordeste da mesma, enquanto o sul e o oeste ainda carecem de pesquisas. Este estudo testou a aplicação de gamaespectrometria e magnetometria para o mapeamento das unidades em um trecho da borda sul-sudeste da Bacia do Araripe. Em conjunto com dados obtidos em campo, foi possível identificar três unidades principais na região: os arenitos aluvionares da Formação Exu, os arenitos ricos em troncos fósseis da Formação Missão Velha e os folhelhos ricos em concreções calcárias fossilíferas da Formação Romualdo. Com o auxílio também de dados geofísicos, foi possível identificar e individualizar as formações Romualdo e Exu, e o contato da bacia com o embasamento. As anomalias observadas nos dados radiométricos foram utilizadas para mapear a unidade do tipo lagerstatten, apresentando um modelo replicável em outros contextos e bacias. Por fim, o levantamento geológico desses detalhes, evidenciou que a Formação Romualdo possui uma extensão ao sul superior à estimada em trabalhos anteriores, estendendo-se ao longo do sopé da chapada com orientação aproximadamente E-W.
