Estimation of Blood Pressure by Using Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Photo-Plethysmogram (PPG)

Abstract: In the current study, we found the relationship between blood pressure (BP) and pulse transit time (PTT). After measuring ECG and photoplethysmogram, the PTT was calculated from the acquired signals. Blood pressure ( BP) , the pressure exerted by circulating blood upon the walls of blood vessels, is an important physiological parameter and can provide some information forpersonal healthcare. Pulse transit time is the time taken for the arterial pulse Pressure wave to travel from the aortic valve to a periphera… Show more

“…These RR non-invasive methods of RR estimation are applicable in both healthcare and fitness monitoring. [40] The RR can also be calculated using Physionet WFDB library using the EDR (ECG Derived Respiration) utility and the derived value has high correlation to the measured values as found by the authors of the library. [60] Since the ECG waveforms are available, RR can be calculated from the ECG waveform itself.…”

“…Aligned with figure 4, the presence of R-peak in acquired ECG signal is always marked as a proximal point (PAT0). With reference to PPG, the observed immediate peak or fall is considered as an end signal that results the systolic and diastolic BP respectively PTT bottom (PTTb) and PTT top (PTTt) as per the usage of terms in the mentioned figure [5]. PTTb = SBP & PTTt = DBP (5) The end of PTT varied based on methods and sensors used to obtain the pulse wave.…”

“…In the current scenario, PTT is the only accepted method to estimate BP invasively without cuff and any explicit instrument in place. Applying statistical techniques like linear regression, the formula for BP estimation is arrived [5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…Several methods are available for estimating the blood pressure and recording the blood pressure waveform from the pulse oximeter. In conjunction with the electrocardiogram (ECG), it is also possible to assess the pulse transit time [19][20][21][22].…”
