Effect of spacing on growth, carbon sequestration, and wood quality of 8-year-old clonal teak plantation for sustainable forest teak management in Java Monsoon Forest. Biodiversitas 23: 4180-4188. Lowland monsoon forest dominated by teak was one of the tropical forest types that can contribute to producing wood production, carbon storage, reduction of emissions, and other ecosystem services. Increasing teak forest productivity could be obtained through teak breeding to get superior teak clones with high diameter growth. Thus, spacing is an important consideration for optimizing the growth, carbon sequestration, and wood properties of teak. However, the study of the growth, carbon sequestration, and wood quality of teak was conducted separately. This research used a selected teak clone aged 8 years with RCBD design with 4 blocks as replications. There were four different spacing as treatments, namely 10 m x 2 m, 8 m x 2 m, 6 m x 2 m, and 3 m x 3 m. The results showed that spacing was a significant effect on DBH, tree height, bole height, carbon sequestration, and volume of teak clones aged 8 years. On the other hand, spacing didn’t significantly affect the physical and mechanical properties of wood. The wood quality test showed that the 6 m x 2 m spacing had high values of bending strength and compressive strength parallel. The highest percentage of heartwood was at a narrow spacing of 6 m x 2 m and did not differ significantly with wide spacing. This indicated that wide spacing was beneficial in terms of teak growth, but wide spacing didn’t significantly affect on wood quality of the teak.

Abstract. Chanlabut U, Nahok B. 2022. Forest structure and carbon stock of Suan Phueng Nature Education Park in Ratchaburi Province, Western Thailand. Biodiversitas 23: 4314-4321. Forests play an important role in the global carbon budget. Yet, carbon stocks in tropical forests are uncertain depending on many factors. This study aims to study forest structures and carbon stocks in Suan Phueng Nature Education Park, Ratchaburi, Western Thailand. In 12 plots of 20 × 20 m, an inventory of trees ? 4.5 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) was carried out. Soil samples were also collected in sampling plots. To describe forest structures, ecological parameters were analyzed (IVI, diversity indices, basal area, and DBH size classes). Forest carbon stocks were calculated based on biomass and soils. Allometric equations were used to calculate aboveground biomass and converse to carbon stock. The soil carbon was analyzed using the wet oxidation method. The result showed that the lower montane forest (493.74 ± 90.20 Mg C ha-1) had the highest forest carbon stock, followed by the dry evergreen + mixed deciduous forest (203.83 ± 82.74 Mg C ha-1), and mixed deciduous forest (145.46 ± 47.90 Mg C ha–1). In the three forests, there were atotal of 637 trees belonging to 70 species in 29 families. Shannon’s diversity index was 3.59 with a range of 2.17-3.21, indicating a moderate to high diversity. Tree density was 1,137.50 stems ha-1 with a range of 737.50-1,581.25 stems ha-1. The basal area had a range of 5.82-11.11 m2 ha-1. The DBH classes exhibited J-shaped distribution. The large trees (?71 cm) had a greater aboveground carbon stock, despite their lower density. This indicates their importance as carbon sinks in the forest. This study highlights that the forests in Suan Phueng Nature Education Park not only have the potential to be carbon stocks but also contain a high diversity of tree species.

Carbon sequestration and stockpiling in Indonesian community forests become a pressing issue in the context of efforts to mitigate climate change and Indonesia’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals. This investigation aimed to determine the carbon stocks at various forest structures within the Lemo Nakai (CF) community forest. The CF encompasses an area between 3°25‘59,588” - 3 27‘57,982” in altitude and 102°19‘25,108” - 102°22‘23,416” in length. The research was conducted between February and July of 2022. The estimated biomass in dense, medium, and sparse forest structures was 601 tons ha-1, 443 tons ha-1, and 241 tons ha-1, respectively, with carbon reservoirs of 276 tons ha-1, 204 tons ha-1, and 111 tons ha-1, respectively. In addition, the estimated CO2eq absorption in dense, medium, and sparse forest structures were 1,013 tons ha-1, 748 tons ha-1, and 406 tons ha-1, respectively.
